FACULTY

ELISE McALPINE

Being named after the Beethoven classic “Fur Elise” put the writing on the wall for Elise to become the singer, musician, and instructor she is today. Her teaching methods are unique and innovative – she has a way of breaking down the mechanics of voice and piano in a way that is both charming and intuitive. Her philosophy is that while talent levels may vary, ANYONE can learn to sing or play, and that “never say die” attitude is infectious, building pride and self-esteem in students of all ages and experiences.

A graduate of the fine Georgia State University music school, Elise studied piano under Dr. Geoffrey Hayden and Dr. James Lyke and voice under the music school director, Dwight Coleman. Her considerable training was never overshadowed, however, by her passion for music and innate sense of artistry. Growing up with a pianist for a father, the stage was set for her to excel in music, and she did. She worked hard and earned every accomplishment. Even in high school, Elise was a standout and had a reputation for having an insatiable appetite for technique, always dedicated to refining her skills. She has a big voice and had to learn over time how to remain in control of it, a journey that has proven infinitely helpful as she encounters young singers with similar obstacles to overcome. They, like she did, learn to turn all potential negatives into positives and all hurdles into eventual triumphs. She knows the human voice and its components better than most and therefore engages singers in a quite physical way, navigating even the most challenging vocal issues with spirit, wisdom, and humor.

Having taught for over 15 years, Elise is proud to be part of HoneyBee and is a supporter of its philosophies. Aside from teaching, Elise sings with The Atlanta Opera Chorus and does a variety of performing engagements in town, including singing with a quartet called Like The Dickens each holiday season. Among her greatest attributes as a teacher of voice and piano is her commitment to approaching children with respect, accountability, and a true connection. Her students aspire to greatness because they see it in front of them each day. More importantly, they see kindness and genuine care, and they reflect those traits at school and in life.
